A frost-free freezer runs a defrost cycle every several hours: a heater warms the evaporator briefly to melt accumulated frost, which drains away. If the defrost heater, thermostat, sensor or control fails, frost keeps building until it coats the coil. Separately, humid air entering through a weak gasket or a door left ajar adds moisture faster than the cycle can shed it. The pattern of the frost tells you which.
Start with the Quick Checks
Look at where the frost forms. A sheet on the rear interior wall points at the defrost system behind that panel. Frost around the door edge or in a ring near the seal points at the gasket. Confirm the door closes fully and is not held open by a drawer or a package. Check that the gasket is supple and clean, since a sticky or cracked seal leaks air. If frost returns after clearing, a part has failed.

Is a Thin Layer of Frost Normal?
